Courtyard

Elsa prepares to transform the courtyard into an ice rink.

The Courtyard is the intermediate area between the main structure of the castle and the castle gates.

History

The courtyard made its first, brief appearance during "For the First Time in Forever," when Elsa commanded the guards "to open up the gates," and Anna eagerly ran through the courtyard to finally step out into the world beyond the castle gates.

The courtyard appeared again after Elsa allowed her emotions to get the best of her and exposed her powers to the attendees of her coronation party. Afraid of the reaction, Elsa sought refuge in the courtyard only to realize a large crowd had gathered there; these were her subjects, eager to see the new queen. Her fear intensifying, Elsa then revealed her powers to the large crowd and after accidentally blasting the Duke of Weselton with her magic, Elsa made the decision to flee Arendelle so as to never risk harming anyone again.

Unfortunately, during her escape, Elsa froze the fjord and unleashed unnatural winter weather conditions, causing everyone gathered in the courtyard to react with alarm. Feeling responsible for the turn of events, Anna decided to pursue Elsa and announced to everyone that Hans would be in charge during her absence.

The courtyard was the location of the last scene in the film, where Elsa invited the inhabitants from the village to join her, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven in a day of winter fun. She froze the courtyard with her powers to create a giant ice rink. Reunited at last, Elsa and Anna happily skated alongside their friends and neighbors in last moments of the film.
