Queen of Arendelle

Other information

Idun was the former Queen of Arendelle, the mother of Elsa and Anna, and the wife of Agdar.

History

After striking Anna with her ice magic, Elsa frantically called out for her mother and father, who took their children to the Valley of the Living Rock, in the hopes that the trolls could be of assistance. Though immediately concerned for Anna's safety, both Idun and Agdar also worried about Elsa's powers getting stronger.

The King of the Trolls, Pabbie was able to heal Anna by removing all traces of Elsa's magic, going so far as to modify the memories of Elsa's magic. However, though the immediate danger had passed, Pabbie warned the royal family that the strength of Elsa's magic would only increase and that she would have to learn to control them or they would be dangerous.

As a result, Agdar ordered the castle gates to be shut and had the two sisters separated, both for their safety and the safety of the kingdom. In the years that followed, Idun and Agdar were the only human contact Elsa had.

Death

During a storm at sea, Idun and Agdar perished when their ship was capsized by a storm at sea. A funeral was held for them, though only Anna attended.

Personality

Idun was more passive than Agdar, but like her husband, she considered the welfare of her daughters to be a top priority and sacrificed much to make sure both were safe. In spite of knowing the danger in Elsa's powers, Idun did not fear her daughter and actively worked with Agdar to help Elsa attain control.

Trivia

  • Idun's character model is a re-colored and customized version of Elsa's coronation model. There are several differences, including her clothing and dark brown hair, but her face and eyes mirror her older daughter's.
  • The Queen is voiced by Frozen's co-director, Jennifer Lee.
  • Her and her husband's names are not on credits, but their names are written in Runic alphabets on their gravestones. According to those, the name of the king is Akðar, and the name of the queen is Iðunn.
    • The Queen's Name: Iðunn can be identified as Ithunn, or Idunn/Idun. Iðunn means ‘youthful’, ‘eternal youth’ ‘again to love’. Her English name could be Idun because the name Idun is a popular name in Scandinavia, the setting of Frozen; the name Idun means 'rejuvenation'.
