The isolation of Arendelle castle was an event that lasted for a period of thirteen years, where in which the castle was shut off from the rest of the kingdom. To mark this, the gates were closed, and remained so for this period of time.

Prelude

After Elsa accidentally hurt Anna one night when they were playing, Agdar saw that the best course of action to stop this from happening again was for Elsa to be kept away from others until she was able to control her powers. As a consequence, Elsa moved into a new bedroom and away from Anna, the castle staff were reduced, and the castle gates were closed.

Controlling her powers

Agdar gave Elsa a pair of gloves to help her control her powers.

For the rest of her childhood, Elsa would spend much of her time closed off from others trying to control her powers. Anna's childhood became much more lonely with the absence of her big sister, and she would spend a lot of time trying to get Elsa to play with her.

Death of the royals

After ten years of this isolation, Agdar and Idun left Arendelle on a visit to another land. On this voyage, they encountered a large storm in which they and their ship were lost at sea. Arendelle mourned for the death of its rulers; even in this time Elsa stayed locked up in the castle, and did not attend the funeral. The gates would remain closed for another three years.

Opening of the gates

Gates

Anna was the first out of the gates as soon as they opened for Elsa's coronation.

The gates were opened for Elsa's coronation with the intention only for them to remain so for a single day. The citizens rejoiced at the opportunity to see the royal sisters, and dignitaries from the surrounding lands came to Arendelle to pay witness the momentous occasion. After preparing as best as she could for the day ahead, Elsa finally ordered the opening of the castle to both the guests and the citizens. While the guests attended the main ceremony and the after-party, the citizens waited in the courtyard for the chance to see their new queen.

After a confrontation with Anna when she had announced that her and Prince Hans were to be married, Elsa's powers were exposed in the Great Hall. Elsa fled from here to the courtyard, where her powers were again exposed, this time to the citizens. After the shock of it all, Elsa decided to flee Arendelle. Anna then took the decision to go after her. When she left on her journey, Anna left Prince Hans in charge of Arendelle. As part of his leadership, Hans used the castle and its facilities to help the citizens and guests cope with the winter by opening up the castle to them.

As the winter worsened, the gates were closed again, only to be reopened when Kristoff returned with Anna. After she was taken inside, the gates were closed once more.

Permanent opening

Courtyard

After Elsa had learnt to control her powers, the castle remained open to everyone.

It was only after Elsa had learned to control her powers that the future of the castle was certain; she told Anna that the gates would never be closed again. From this point onward, the castle remained open to the citizens, and became a much more lively place.
